April 27 — Poetry Night at Dallin Museum!

Attention poets and poetry lovers! On Thursday, April 27, in honor of National Poetry Month, the Cyrus Dallin Art Museum and Arlington’s current Poet Laureate Jean Flanagan are thrilled to host a special event celebrating poets of Arlington’s past and present, including Cyrus Dallin’s wife Vittoria’s legacy as a poet.

This free event starts at 6pm with tours of the museum. At 7 p.m., Arlington poet Teresa Cader will read some of her poems in the Cutter Gallery (museum’s lower floor). Local poets will then have an opportunity to share their work during an open mic session. Refreshments provided by Arlington’s Food Link will be served. All poets and poetry lovers are welcome!

The Dallin Museum is located at 611 Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington. Parking is available in the lot behind the museum, located off Mystic Street. For more information about this program, please visit http://www.dallin.org/events or contact Director of Outreach and Engagement Nancy Blanton at nblanton@dallin.org.

Arlington Poet Laureate Jean Flanagan

Jean Flanagan’s vision for her first year as poet laureate is to bring Arlington’s poetry community together to be more visible and accessible to all.

“Poetry is not a mystery, nor should it be restricted to the halls of academia. It is open to all of us in your everyday lives to read, write, and to be inspired,” says Flanagan. “There are many wonderful poets in our community, and I would like to see them take part in outreach events in the town. Arlington is rich with cultural, historical, and natural treasures worth writing and reading about.”

Poet Teresa Cader

Teresa Cader’s poetry collections include History of Hurricanes (Northwestern, 2009), selected as a “must read” book by the Massachusetts Book Awards; The Paper Wasp (Northwestern, 1999); and Guests (Ohio State, 1991), which won The Journal/Charles B. Wheeler Prize and the Norma Farber First Book Award.

Cader has been awarded two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and multiple honors and fellowships including the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Radcliffe Institute and the Poetry Society of America.

Her poems have appeared in The Atlantic, Harvard Magazine, Slate, Poetry Magazine, Harvard Review, On the Seawall, Agni, Ploughshares, Plume and many other publications. Cader’s work has been translated into Icelandic and Polish. She served on the faculty of the Lesley MFA program in creative writing for eleven years. She holds degree from Wilson College, the University of Wisconsin, and Harvard University and lives in Arlington.

Cyrus Dallin Art Museum

The museum contains nearly 100 works of artist, and former Arlington resident, Cyrus Dallin—including approximately 50 sculptures, 10 paintings, and several coins and medals. The museum’s mission is to promote new insights into our shared history by exploring the life, work and values of this celebrated sculptor. Best yet, the museum has a newly redesigned front entryway and Indigenous People’s Gallery.

It’s open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., and by appointment. For more information about visiting the museum, contact Nancy Blanton, nblanton@dallin.org
