Arts Commission Received Grant to Plan, Pilot New Murals Project

The Arlington Commission for Arts and Culture (ArtsArlington) seeks volunteers passionate about public art to serve on an Advisory Committee to provide input on a new grant-funded, long-range mural art plan for the Town.

The Commission has received a Transformative Growth Grant to explore a series of public murals, in collaboration with the Arlington Chamber of Commerce (ACC) and the Arlington Center for the Arts (ACA). The grant funds the creation of a comprehensive plan to guide development of murals in the Town. After a 6-month planning phase, the partners have funding to test drive the plan by implementing 1 to 3 murals.

The Commission seeks community representatives who are excited to consider both the larger vision and the many logistical details necessary to bring impactful murals to the Town. Committee members will represent diverse community perspectives and stakeholders; neighborhood residents, local businesses, building owners, artists, youth, and representatives of key partners such as local schools, nonprofits and relevant town departments are welcomed to participate. To invite the widest range of views, ArtsArlington has also created an online survey open to everyone who lives or works in Arlington at tinyurl.com/AtownMuralSurvey.

The project Steering Committee comprises Steve Poltorzycki for ArtsArlington, Tom Formicola for ACA and Beth Locke for ACC. The planning process will be guided by murals project consultant, Amanda Hill, an experienced administrator and mural artist, and ArtsArlington’s public art curator, Cecily Miller.

An initial public Project Overview and Site Selection virtual meeting will be held on Thursday, November 17, 2022, from 7:30-9 PM, and the first in-person meeting for Advisory Committee members will be held on Thursday, December 15, 2022, 7-9 PM.

Applications for the Advisory Committee may be made via the project Google form here by Monday, November 7, 2022.
