Anne Black – Photography/Mixed Media/Jewelry, and Classical Music Performance

I am a classical musician and visual artist and have lived in Arlington for over 30 years.  As a musician, I enjoy a dynamic career as violist and violinist, performing a wide variety of music. I have toured the US, Asia and Europe with the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, the Boston Symphony/Boston Pops as a substitute violist, the Handel + Haydn Society period instrument orchestra, and Dinosaur Annex Music Ensemble. I am Principal Viola of the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra and the Cantata Singers orchestra, and I perform with many other local groups, including Aston Magna Festival, Collage New Music, Emmanuel Music, Boston Baroque, Clerici Ensemble, Masterworks Chorale, and Peregrine Consort.

The fertile Boston-area arts scene allows me the freedom to pursue a professional freelance career performing symphony, chamber orchestra, chorus, ballet, chamber ensemble and solo concerts. From baroque and classical repertoire performed on period instruments, to contemporary and experimental chamber music and solo performances, I have thrived on a wealth of opportunities.

My work as a visual artist includes photography, digital montage, painting, monotype, mixed media, jewelry, and fiber art. I take special delight in unexpected vantage points, abstraction, complex layering, intuitive mark-making, vivid color and texture. I was a resident artist at Arlington Center for the Arts for thirteen years. After we lost our space at the Gibbs School location, I was fortunate to find a new studio space in West Concord, where I have been since July 2017. I still participate in ACA’s yearly Arlington Open Studios, in addition to other local shows. Recently, I began teaching classes in Acrylics and Mixed Media for Arlington Community Education, as well as small workshops at my studio in West Concord.

My art has always been closely connected with my love of nature (nearby Spy Pond has been a special source of local inspiration), and I am equally inspired by my surroundings at home and on my travels.

My artist statement sums it up, and might be more accurately entitled my “Life Statement”:

Swirling dawn mists.  Moonlit cloudscapes. Fanciful reflections.  Patterns of light and shadow. Full-frame worlds exploding from tiny dewdrops. Abstract urban scenes.

Bird songs.  Choruses of cicadas, crickets and bull frogs. Crashing surf, burbling streams.  Footsteps in the snow. Wind in the treetops. Kids playing. City sounds. String quartets with friends.

Inspiration everywhere – Never a dull moment!
