ArtsArlington’s current featured artist is Sharon Stafford, whose work explores contemporary wire basketry and studio jewelry through an eclectic mix of metalsmithing, woven metal, and crocheted wire.
Sharon has always felt the need to make and create. After discovering a strong creative connection with metalsmithing in school, she first pursued a design career before returning to metalsmithing about 20 years ago. Over time, she expanded her practice by adding woven metal, creating jewelry, and eventually moving into larger, more dimensional basketry work.
Her work is deeply inspired by texture, both visual and tactile. Whether working with wire or sheet metal, smooth or hammered surfaces, Sharon is drawn to the slow, hands-on process of shaping, weaving, and building each piece. She often brings metalsmithing elements into her basketry and uses basketry techniques in her jewelry, creating a thoughtful connection between both forms.
Sharon shares her work through local open studio events and juried exhibits, where she especially values the opportunity to talk with visitors about her process and finished pieces.
