Arlington Historical Society: Conservation of Abel Whitney Sideboard

An important recent acquisition, this 1813 sideboard was made by cabinet-maker Abel Whitney (1781-1853), whose shop was near present day Porter Square in Cambridge. Commissioned by famous Arlington resident Amos Whittemore, it is a gift of a Whittemore descendant. Made of solid mahogany and mahogany veneers, the piece is a good example of the Sheraton style, popular in the Federal period (1790-1815). A unique treasure and possibly one of the few Abel Whitney pieces still in existence, it merits conservation and further research.
