When the rich older spinster Emily French is brutally murdered, suspicion falls on her handsome young companion Leonard Vole. After he’s arrested and standing trial, he counts on his intriguing German wife Romaine to provide the alibi for his whereabouts at the time of the crime. But when Sir Robarts questions her, it quickly becomes clear that there is a lot of drama going on under the surface. When the time comes, will she be a witness for the defense or the prosecution?

The stakes are high and the intrigue is thick in this play from Christie, which has fascinated people through several versions over the years (from a short story to a play to a movie and to a TV series).

This version features shocking witness testimony, impassioned outbursts from the dock, and a young man’s fight to escape the hangman’s noose. Generally regarded as one of Christie’s most accomplished plays, this suspenseful thriller twists and turns until the very end—and then some more.

Set in London in the early 1950s, the play touches on profound themes in the wake of WWII in a war-weary nation.
