Join us on Wednesday, July 14, 6:30 – 8pm (rain date July 15) for a LIVE community celebration of our project Haiku in the Heights, featuring an open mic, live music, and a storefront stroll to enjoy some of the original haiku that have been painted on storefront windows.
Heights Haiku celebrates the streets and shops, the green spaces and local history, and the people and community spirit of the Heights. This project inspired more than 200 haiku entries, all of which will be added to Arts Arlington in the coming months. The poets — ranging in age from 7 to 92– were aided in their mission by local poet and teacher Jessie Brown, who led 4 well-attended haiku workshops, as well as Arlington’s poet laureate Steven Ratiner, who worked with his Beehive Poets group to put together a special collection of haiku. The poems are being painted by 19 volunteer artists working with coaching from legendary sign painter Kenji Nakayama. Come for the celebration, and plan to stay for dinner or get a takeout picnic at one of the great eateries of this distinctive neighborhood. There will also be some special opportunities to shop local!
Thanks to the Grants Committee of ACAC and the Mass Cultural Council for funding, event sponsors Century 21 Realty and Roasted Granola, and the many local businesses who made contributions and are generously hosting poems in their windows. Visit HERE more information on the celebration!
